Can a Chemical Peel Clear My Acne Scars?

Chemical peels are a popular facial treatment that reduce pockmarks, discoloration, and scars caused by acne. Chemical peels work beneath the skin’s surface to reveal new skin cells and promote cell growth, which reduces the appearance of acne scarring over time.

During a chemical peel, the top layers of skin are removed by chemical solutions, paving the way for the growth of new and smoother skin on the face. In addition to acne scars, chemical peels also treat wrinkles and fine lines and other forms of skin discoloration over time. Some clients may need additional treatments to reach the desired results. Treatments can also be combined with other cosmetic procedures simultaneously.

Are There Different Types of Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are typically administered at a med spa, office, or outpatient surgical facility. A peel can be performed at three different skin depths, with differing applications and downtimes.

Light Chemical Peel

During a light chemical peel treatment, less solutions are applied to remove the outer layer of skin and treat uneven skin tone, acne, fine lines and wrinkles, and dry skin. Once the chemicals are applied, skin begins to whiten, and you may feel mild stinging while the solution is on your skin. Once treated, the chemicals will be washed from the treated areas with a neutralizing solution.

Following a light chemical peel, the treated skin is usually dry, red, and slightly irritated, and a protective ointment may be applied to soothe your skin. You may return to your regular activities and resume wearing makeup the following day. New skin may be lighter or darker than usual following the light treatment but will even out over time. Light peel treatments can be repeated every two to five weeks.

Medium Chemical Peel

During medium chemical peel treatments, skin cells are removed from the epidermis and portions of the upper and middle layers of skin and also used to treat discoloration, wrinkles, and acne scars more aggressively. You may feel some moderate stinging and heat for up to 20 minutes during the procedure, and cold compresses may be applied to reduce the symptoms. No neutralizing solution is needed during medium chemical peels.

Following a medium chemical peel, your skin will be red and swollen and may continue to sting for a period after, so a protective ointment may be applied to soothe the area and prevent dryness. You can apply ice packs and over-the-counter pain medications. You will be scheduled for a follow-up soon after treatment in order to monitor your healing.

As swelling decreases, it is normal for the skin to form a crust and may darken. Treated skin may take up to two weeks to heal following a chemical peel, however, redness may be experienced for several months. Some clients may require additional treatments to achieve the desired results.

Deep Chemical Peel

Deep chemical peels treat deeper wrinkles, acne scars, and precancerous growths. During a deep chemical peel, intravenous fluids may be administered, and your heart rate may be monitored closely throughout the procedure. The full procedure requires approximately 90 minutes to complete, but the solution will only be applied in 15-minute intervals to limit your exposure to the chemicals used.

Following a deep chemical peel, you will likely experience more pain, red discoloration, swelling, irritation, tightness, and your eyes may be swollen temporarily. Surgical dressing might be applied, and you will be given directions on what procedures you must follow from home. Your recovery time will be longer, and you may also be given a prescription pain medication. Deep chemical peels do not need additional treatments, and it may take several months before your natural skin color returns to see the full results of the treatment.
